Bellini’s Coal Fired Pizza

You have never seen a pizza restaurant as pretty and upscale as this one. This is the newest restaurant in the Federal Highway between Sunrise Highway and Oakland Park Boulevard to open. It’s quite beautiful They even have an outside area to dine.

Paul and I were greeted by a hostess and seated at a beautiful table with chandeliers overhead. There is a bar area with white glass counters where you can sit and have a drink or even eat.

We both ordered small think crusted “make your own” pizzas. Mine was with meatballs, shaved mozzarella cheese and carmelized onions. It was absolutely cooked to perfection; thin and crispy. Paul ordered a Margherita pizza (fresh mozzarella cheese with fresh tomatoes and basil) but added Maine lobster ($4. extra), which was sautéed in butter, garlic and lemon. His was also cooked to perfection and quite delicious.

We were introduced to one of the owners, Matt, who was thrilled to meet us. He does have a partner in the business, Lou (he wasn’t there at the time). It is their first adventure in restaurants.

Besides pizzas, they offer hot appetizers such as truffled macaroni and cheese; sautéed broccoli rabe with extra virgin olive oil and carmelized onions with sausage; sautéed calamari marinara or even spicy fra diavolo; warm baked brie in puff pastry with apricot glaze and apple slices (which sounds really quite delectable); all types of salads; paninis made with “inside Out” Ciabatta bread (all served with a side Caesar salad or side mixed greens salad with creamy balsamic dressing); AND even chicken wings (served a variety of ways); and if that is not enough to choose from – there are main dishes such as penne a la vodka; capellini with house made meatballs; pounded chicken over spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes; ravioli served different ways; pan seared red snapper – oh my – such choices!!!!

Then there is pizza! All sorts, all sizes, thin crust (traditional white dough or even whole wheat dough) – small or large sized.

If that were not enough, they offer desserts – which of course Paul and I had to taste. Since Girl Scout camp – I haven’t had a “smore” made with homemade fresh marshmallows! If you have never had a smore – it’s graham crackers, melted chocolate and melted mushy marshmallows. My god – it’s better than “you know what!”

Try Bellini’s…..I think it’s great and that you will really enjoy!

Fusion & Flavors Restaurant

My friend Terri kept telling me about this great new restaurant across the street from the Coral Ridge Mall, called Fusion & Flavors Restaurant. It is a very small restaurant, which seats about 20 people, owned by a wonderful couple from Peru, Claudia and Miguel. Apparently Miguel had previously been a chef at an Italian restaurant as most of their options are typically Italian style. Not only do they serve wonderful and unique fusion of Italian dishes, but also high end Peruvian and international cuisine.

Well….I must tell you that you have to try this restaurant! The food is quite spectacular! You really cannot beat the prices also. We were six people that went to dinner the other night. Claudia serves and Miguel is the chef. First the Chef sent out a taste of Sauteed Salmon served on a slice of zucchini with a drop of olive oil, that was cooked to perfection. Two people in our party ordered the Clams and Spaghetti, $8.00, (they just about licked the bowl), I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana ($7.49) served with penne marinara. Terri and Marvel ordered the Steak Risotto ($7.49). I tasted the risotto, which was wonderfully creamy and rich. Mike ordered the Skirt Steak ($8.99), which is served with the Chef’s inspiration. Last night it was served with zucchini and yellow potato slices, which Mike thought tasted like potatoes from New Orleans. We were all quite pleased. Mike even took home a piece of their Chocolate Cake which he planned on having later on with a glass of milk at home.

AND….If you are interested, they are open for lunch. Prices for lunch are about $2.00 less than dinner prices!

I’m telling you….you cannot beat this place for good food, great owners, and the prices are unbelievable! YOU MUST TRY IT!

Lola’s on Harrison

The other night my friend, Robert, and I had a dining experience that I have to tell you about! We went to Lola’s on Harrison Street in Hollywood. I had never been to Hollywood since I have been living in Florida (7 years). What an absolutely lovely area (if you have never been). It’s like what Las Olas Boulevard used to be, but no longer is.

We walked into a beautifully appointed modern restaurant, which is owned by Chef Michael Wagner and run by his General Manager, Heather Keenly. They were the friendliest people I had met in a restaurant in a long time. Heather sat with us for quite a while explaining how she and Chef Michael had met. Then Chef Michael came to sit down with us explaining his background and the concept of owning his own restaurant.

Hollywood offers many restaurants….but Lola’s is the only American restaurant in the area. Lola’s on Harrison offers fine choices of starters, such as Purple Potato Skins (sundried tomato crème fraiche, roasted garlic cloves, smoked bacon bits, chives and American sturgeon caviar (which was scrumptious!), “Falling Off the Bone” Beef Shortribs (roasted aromatic vegetables, orange-horseradish Gremolata, natural pan juices and ricotta salata (also terrific!), Maryland Blue Crab Cake (fresh lump crab meat, served with carrot-mango slaw and herb tartar sauce (unbelievable!....with no filling), and Warm Goat Cheese Salad (pistachio crusted goat cheese, fresh raspberries, arugula, Belgium endive, toasted pistachios and raspberry-shallot vinaigrette)….out of this world!!!!

The entrees are also fascinating offerings; such as Coca Cola BBQ Beef Ribs (slow roasted center cut beef ribs, basted with Lola’s signature Coca Cola BBQ sauce, served with buttermilk onion rings, and herb creamed yellow corn). You could die for these ribs! Also served was a Milk Fed Veal Chop Oscar (egg battered bone in veal rib chop, served with garlic roasted asparagus, sweet super lump crab meat with a delicious herb hollandaise sauce)! Is your mouth watering yet? They also offer as entrees: a Grilled Skirt Steak (which our neighbors next to us ordered) and it smelled yummy; Crispy Berkshire Pork Shank, Durham Ranch Buffalo Cheeseburger, Grilled Angus T-Bone Steak, Skillet Seared Salmon and Grilled Ruby Red Trout.

When I say that this restaurant was TERRIFIC!!!! I mean that it was OUTSTANDING and definitely worth the short trip to cutesy Hollywood. Enjoy!!!

Lola's Cupcakery on Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale

My friend from St. Thomas, Carolyn, came in on Thursday for a long weekend. As we were driving down Las Olas Boulevard, I happened to mention and point out the new Lola’s Cupcakery to her. She immediately asked me to turn around so that she could try one. (She has a sweet tooth!)

Her eyes popped out of her head as we walked into the bakery. They have cases filled to the brim with wonderful cupcakes. She really had a tough decision to make as she glazed upon the beauties.

Lola’s offers a scrumptious selection of flavors every day. All flavors are available as part of their signature range and each one has a delicious butter cream icing at least 2 inches tall!

Some of their specialties are: peanut butter and jelly cupcakes, chocolate with butter cream icing with sprinkles, chocolate gnash cupcakes, rocky road cupcakes smothered in marshmallows, nuts and milk chocolate buttons, strawberry swirled with white chocolate cupcake with fresh strawberry icing and a signature ring, coconut cupcakes with coconut butter cream icing and freshly grated coconut, chocolate milk cupcakes with vanilla icing and chocolate pieces, carrot cupcakes (pecan-filled carrot cupcake) with cinnamon cream-cheese icing, red velvet cupcakes, which is a mild crimson chocolate cupcake with cream-cheese icing, and on and on. There are a lot more that I haven’t mentioned.

Carolyn couldn’t make a choice; so therefore, we had to go back 3 times during the short weekend stay, purchasing two at each visit for herself! She actually told Laura and Donald Kaplan that they should start a new “twelve step” program!

I highly recommend Lola’s Cupcakery for a sweet taste of yesterday and today. Enjoy!

CHEF JEAN PIERRE’S COOKING SCHOOL VS. CHEF ANGELO (FROM CASA DE ANGELO RESTAURANT) COOKOFF

Chef Jean Pierre’s Cooking School is a terrific place to go to learn different cooking techniques and different recipes. You sit like you are at a cooking show, bringing your own wine, and are entertained by Chef Jean Pierre while he is cooking whatever it is he is cooking that night. He has a long history of restaurant ownership in the Ft. Lauderdale area with a French flair.

Casa De Angelo Restaurante is a wonderful Italian restaurant. I received an email a few weeks ago that both chefs were going to compete in an unusual cook-off to see whose food people enjoyed the most. Since I had never done anything like this, I decided to attend.

When I arrived, I was seated with 7 total strangers, who quickly became good acquaintances. I’d like to mention their names. Dining with me was David Morrow, Orazio Spagnardi, Marilyn Lettman, Bob and Dianne Congdon, and Michelle Handel joined by Joseph Herman. We really entertained ourselves with comparing the foods that were served us.

First course was (Italian) Arborio Risotto with fresh roasted Porcini mushrooms, Reggiano cheese and Rosemary infused with white Truffle oil. The wine that was served with that course was Borgo Tesis/Fantinel Chardonnay 2007. The French first course was Bouillabaisse Risotto Saffron and Fennel Nage, served with Domaine Vocoret Chablis 2006.

The second course on the Italian side was Chilean Sea Bass with Crispy Zucchini Flowers and sweet Rock Shrimp, over Roasted Garlic and Lemon Zest and Prosecco wine sauce. The French offering for the second course was Pepper Crusted & Roasted Chilean Sea Bass, with a Carrot & Ginger Reduction, Roasted Garlic and Basil Oil, served over Roasted Beets and Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes.

The third Italian offering was Filet Mignon, crusted with black pepper potatoes over cauliflower puree, 12-year-old port wine reduction sauce with roasted black mission figs. With this course they served Ruffino Chianti Superiore 2007. On the French side was Roasted Filet Mignon, caramelized onion, Roquefort and port demi glaze, gruyere & goat cheese with potatoes au gratin, camembert butter and a buttered jumbo asparagus. The wine offering was Château Coufran 2005.

If that wasn’t enough, the final course as dessert….the Italian choice was a pistachio cream filled Bigne warm chocolate topped and served with maraschino wild cherries. The wine served as Dolce. The French choice was hazelnut crusted chocolate and banana pie served with a vanilla and rum crème anglaise boysenberry coulis, also served with Dolce dessert wine.

The service was excellent, the food was excellent and I rolled out of their at least 20 pounds heavier than I originally came. Boy…..what a meal! I would go onto www.chefjeanpierre.com to see if they are offering another night like this one. Boy was it GREAT!!!!!

Valentino’s Cucina Italiana

In speaking with people in the area, I kept hearing about a restaurant that would always come up in my various conversations that I had never been to. So…..I just had to go to Valentino’s Cucina Italiana Restaurante. If you didn’t know where you were going, you might never have seen this small, but quite excellent, restaurant. It is owned by Chef Giovanni Rocchio. I also would recommend making a reservation as it is VERY popular. Who knew? And now I know why.

My friend Ann and I shared the Tortelli Di Zucca, which is butternut squash, crushed amaretto cookies and pumpkin seeds in ravioli for our Antipasti. We literally licked the plate, they were so delicious!

For Ann’s main course she had the Pollo Alla Valentino which is chicken filled with spinach, white raisins, pine nuts, goat cheese and Portobello mushrooms. Boy….was that good! My choice was a special for the evening, Lobster Fra Diablo, which was also excellent.

As a dessert, we both shared a vanilla bean crème Brule served in an edible almond basket. This also had various fruits at the bottom of it. If I keep on eating all these fantastic meals I am going to need a gastric by-pass operation. This is a keeper restaurant. One that will become one of my top restaurants in the Ft. Lauderdale area, for sure. Please go and Enjoy!

Steak 954

On April 30th, the new W Hotel opened with a great new restaurant named “Steak 954”. This is Stephen Starr’s first foray into the South Florida dining scene. The 224-seat restaurant is the latest spot to offer a “modern interpretation of the classic steakhouse menu.” Chef Jason Smith, formerly of Table 8, is in the kitchen. In the dining room you will find a 15-foot-long reef aquarium with a school of jellyfish, which I might say is totally amazing! The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily and will eventually serve breakfast in the coming months.

My friend Robert and I decided to give it a try. First I must mention that their bar is absolutely stupendous in atmosphere. I’ve never seen anything like it before. You must go just to check it out for a drink before dinner. You will be amazed.

Robert and I shared an appetizer of Lobster and Crab Coconut Ceviche ($10.) with a lime sauce. It was quite excellent. Then we both ordered an 18 oz. Dry Aged Rob Eye steak ($48.), which was cooked to perfection. One of the most delicious steaks I have eaten in quite a long time. We shared side orders of both Caramelized Onions and Mixed Mushrooms (both $8. each) and an order of Truffle Potatoes Gratin ($9.) We literally rolled out of the restaurant! I was stuffed but deliciously so. Our waiter was very attentive and knew all about their offerings. They have all sorts of steaks, including Australian Tajima Kobe steaks. They offer fish dishes, chicken and also duck entrees also.

It was quite an extensive menu. I really believe that if you adore a good steak, then you must go to “Steak 954”. Enjoy!

Chef Adam Kanner

Along time ago I purchased, at a charity event, a dinner for six, offered by an event planning, catering, personal chef and theme dinning gentleman by the name of Adam Kanner. Last night I finally used that service and boy was I thrilled!

Chef Adam is not only a very nice man, but a WONDERFUL chef. We had previously set up the menu on the telephone. I really didn’t know how good he was until last night, but the menu sounded great.

First, as my guests arrived, he served mini-beef & mushroom Wellingtons served with a most delicious dipping sauce. Then in addition, he served this most wonderful cheese and tomato hot casserole which you dipped your home-made Italian garlic bread toasted slices. My friends flipped!

As we sat down at my dining room table, he plated and served a wonderfully delicious crab cake with black bean and corn salsa with greens and cucumbers served with balsamic vinegar. The crab cake was stuffed with lump crabmeat.

The main course was Francais Red Snapper served with a lemon-wine sauce, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach and carrots.

We made coffee and served it with little individual apple tarts topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, which Chef Adam called it something else, but I don’t remember the proper name. My guests walked away totally stuffed and very appreciative comments about Chef Adam. It was like having an old friend cooking for me (he was so nice) and my guests all hugged and kissed him.

If you ever need catering of any kind, I would highly recommend Chef Adam Kanner. You will adore him AND his cooking!!!

China Grill

My friends and I were invited to a reception at the restaurant in the Fort Lauderdale Grand Hotel called the China Grill. Since I was introduced to the Manager of Catering, Sharon, as the restaurant critic for BocaRaton.com and the Bites Network…boy were we treated to a fantastic Asian fusion experience.

First let me tell you how beautiful this very large restaurant is. The restaurant is absolutely striking in different shades of red, black and white. It also has a very large outside deck to enjoy watching the large yachts go by. It has 2 private dining areas for parties (and what a fabulous place for a party it is!).

Our waiter, Gary Horn, was the BEST! When you go there, you must ask for him.

Our first course was a huge Sushi platter, which was beautifully served, which included Sashimi (both salmon and white fish), with a seafood salad served over seaweed (which was served in a martini glass), Dragon Rolls (tempura shrimp, crabmeat, mayo, cucumber, masago, mango and avocado), Salted Edamame (steamed soy beans) and another type of roll, which was delicious, but I don’t know which it was.

Our second course was the Crackling Calamari Salad, which was extremely savory and a hot vs. cold crisp contrast of fried Calamari served over endive lettuce, served with a lime miso dressing. Then we were served their Spicy Beef & Scallion Dumplings, served over red and yellow peppers and shredded greens. Yummy!!

Would you believe…..our next course was Sweet Soy Marinated Skirt Steak, served with wok sautéed lo mein noodles and tempura shitake mushrooms (God…was that delicious). The sauce was to die for!!!! Then came Curry Miso Black Cod, served with sweet soy glazed Chinese broccoli and yuzu-miso butter sauce! You can’t even imagine!!!!!”

That’s not even it…….there is more! Desserts were served….I couldn’t even breath. Bananas in a Box (caramelized bananas and caramel cream), Hazelnut Chocolate Torte (Blackberry and orange crème anglaise sauce – 10 layers) AND Cheesecake Pot Stickers (five-spice chocolate and selection of tropical raspberry sauce).

The China Grill gathers ingredients from around the globe to compose its signature World Cuisine. To best enjoy dinner there, consider it a journey to be taken from different parts of the menu. Portions are dramatically presented and meant to be shared.

Well – you can tell from my review that this restaurant is the BEST I’ve been to in a long time and is a MUST for anyone. Enjoy!

Fogarty’s

I met a group of friends at this new restaurant in Coral Springs called Fogarty’s. They originated in Key West and they say “it’s a fresh taste from Key West.” They opened the original Fogarty’s on Duval Street in Key West in 1999 and are opening more of these restaurants in the near future in other spots of Southern Florida.

The first offering served at our table was the most delicious hot loaf of bread served with room temperature butter, which I really am impressed when a restaurant serves room temperature butter to actually spread on your bread. It was yummy!”

One of my friends raved about their “Smoky Joe’s Ribs”, which are baby back pork ribs with sweet and smoky BBQ sauce, served with mashed potatoes and onion strings ($22.). Of the 8 friends at out table, 4 ordered this as their entrees. The meat was actually falling off the bones and it was quite a large rack of ribs. Two people ordered their “Kingston Chicken” ($18.), which is actually a whole chicken boned and served marinated in flavorful jerk spices, served with rice, black beans and fried plantains. They adored this dish. I ordered the “Fogarty’s Grouper” ($25.), which was locally caught filet of grouper with crab stuffing, mashed potatoes, asparagus and roasted red pepper sauce. It too was absolutely delicious.

Everything was cooked to order and beautifully served. Our server, Lynn, couldn’t have been nicer and very helpful. Their portions are large, so you had better be hungry when you go there.

They say that they work hard at combining island friendliness with a serious professional desire to entertain their guests. I think that they have accomplished this. You definitely should try this “new” restaurant in the Coral Springs area and enjoy!!

Smith & Jones Bar and Grill

Bob and I decided to try a new restaurant on Las Olas called Smith & Jones Bar and Grill…..it had only been opened for 2 months. It was a beautiful night so when we arrived, we decided to eat on their patio instead of eating inside, as they were watching football games on the tv’s.

Our server, Bobby Weinstein, couldn’t have been more helpful in suggesting the restaurant’s specialties. We started sharing an appetizer, Smoked Fish Dip, served with celery and carrot stalks, pita bread strips and toasted bread slices. It really was good as we gobbled it up quickly.”

For dinner entrée’s, Bob ordered their Fresh Atlantic Salmon ($17.95), served with black beans, herb rice, chipotle sauce and an absolutely delicious side of mango cole slaw. The entrée was just perfectly cooked and quite good. My entrée was the New Mexican Roasted Chicken Enchilada ($12.95), which I absolutely loved. It was served with 2 sauces, each on one half of the enchilada, which were chimayo red and poblano green chili sauces. Boy….was it yummy!!!

Afterwards, Bobby highly recommended a dessert, which Bob decided to have. He tried their Banana Cream Pie, which he almost licked the plate clean.

The restaurant serves sort of a mixture of orangic flatbreads, salads, burgers and sandwiches, barbeque specialties and entrees such as a “Thanksgiving” dinner, Iron Skillet Spiked Florida Dolphin, Uncle Betty’s Meatloaf, Midwest Good Ol’ Boy Pot Roast plus steaks and chops. They also offer “On the Sides” such as Three Cheese Mac and Cheese, Smashed Red Bliss Potatoes, Seasonal Fresh Veggies, and even Sage Stuffing.

There is quite a nice selection of offerings. I believe that Smith & Jones will become a local favorite and I definitely recommend that you go and enjoy!

H2O Café and Java Shop

Things are on the go these days on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. A host of new hotels are replacing older properties and along with the new hotels and condos comes some fine new opportunities to dine out.

My decorator and I decided to go to H2O Café, which is a 2-part restaurant. One side is a mostly outdoor sidewalk café that is great for people watching. The other side has a coffee shop that sells sandwiches, salads, bottled water and other convenience items perfect for carrying across the street to the beach.”

We dined in the café and checked out the hunks (and babes) on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. The menu is extensive with chicken, fish, salads and lots of steaks. We tried an Asparagus and Crab Salad with Roasted Red Pepper Dressing and I ordered the Duck Tacos, which I adore and Stefano ordered a Mushroom Risotto, which he flipped over (especially being from Italy; he is used to great Risotto). The salad was extremely good. My Duck Tacos was served in 2 soft tacos served with peanut sauce and also guacamole. If you love Peking Duck…then you will love this substitute!

The meals were very filling and the result was that we were a little too full to try out dessert. All in all the service was fast and very friendly. The waiter, Calvin, was fully informed about the food; we’ve had a few experiences at other new places where that wasn’t the case. We enjoyed the food and recommend H2O on your next visit to the beach.

Enjoy!

Oceans 234

A week ago I went to watch my granddaughter’s soccer game and afterwards my son Mark, my daughter-in-law Amy and granddaughter Andi and I decided to go somewhere where neither of us had been to for lunch. We decided to go to a restaurant on Deerfield Beach, but when we got there, instead of going to where we were going to I noticed a very pretty restaurant across the street from the original restaurant that looked quite inviting, with a casual atmosphere. It is called Oceans 234 located directly on the beachside of Ocean Drive where you can actually hear the surf pounding on the shore. You are sitting so close to the ocean that the salt can tickle your nose. They have breathtaking views of the ocean with calm ocean breezes. We chose to sit outside to be able to watch the ocean and the people on the beach.

The restaurant has an upscale setting with a gorgeous patio area where we dined. The menu varies with mostly fresh seafood offerings but also quite a lot of other choices. Also, the presentation of our meals were quite lovely. The menu offers many choices and covers all price ranges. Amy ordered their Tropical Chicken Salad ($12.) which is served with grilled pineapple, mandarin oranges, bleu cheese, avocado and served with Tamarind vinaigrette dressing. Her actual quote was “this is now my favorite new restaurant!

Mark ordered the Turkey Sandwich ($9.), served with fresh turkey breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheddar cheese; which he also loved. I ordered the Fresh Maine Lobster Roll ($16.), which is chilled fresh lobster meat salad with shaved red onions and lemon pepper aioli. It too was absolutely fabulous! Little Andi (who is 7) ordered off the Children’s Menu, which includes such favorites as Cheese Quesadilla, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, Spaghetti and Chicken Fingers (served with French fries).

To top it all off, there was actually 2 musicians playing while we dined on our lunch which entertained my granddaughter and us.

I really think that you should all try this 5-year-old favorite restaurant, as it surely will become one of your favorites also! Enjoy!

Bimini Boatyard Bar & Grill

I had never been to the Bimini Boatyard Bar & Grill before and in asking different friends if they had ever been there, they said that they had been there many years ago, but hadn’t been recently. They did remember that it was a good restaurant, though.

Well, Beatrice and I went last week. It was a very large, bright, white restaurant with plenty of windows facing the Intracoastal with many happy and cordial workers that greeted us and made us feel that we were at home.

Our server highly recommended the “World Famous” Bimini Bread as an appetizer. Out came a very warm loaf of bread coated with honey and something else that made it crunchy and quite delicious ($4.00) that we just had to eat the whole loaf!

Beatrice ordered the “Bahamian Shrimp Scampi” ($15.00) which is shrimp sautéed in garlic, fresh herbs and topped with a smooth white wine reduction, served with deliciously al dente mixed vegetables. She thought it was excellent!

I ordered the Rigatoni Sorrentina with Shrimp ($18.00), which is a dish of robust rigatoni and mozzarella in a sweet basic marinara sauce, made with romano and parmesan cheese. It also was delicious!

Their menu is stocked with appetizers, soups, salads, seafood sandwiches like Blackened Mahi and Grilled Salmon, or Angus New York Strip Steak sandwiches, burgers and also grilled chicken “Stephen’s” Sandwich served with sautéed mushrooms, avocado and jack cheese with sour cream. Everything sounded wonderful that it wasn’t easy to make our choices.

I believe that the Bimini Boatyard Bar & Grill is under new ownership and they offer new and delicious specials daily. You should go back to the Bimini and try it again, it’s worth the beautiful trip down the 17th Street Causeway! Enjoy!!

YOLO (You Only Live Once)

The other night Bob and I decided to try a new restaurant on Las Olas called (by their shortened name) YOLO….which stands for “You Only Live Once.” It is the new “hot” restaurant in the area. Not only is it nicely appointed inside but it has a large area outside for drinks and quiet conversations with fire pits all around for ambiance.

Our server, Robert, was quite helpful in making popular suggestions, including telling us the specials of the evening.

For starters, Bob and I shared their “Wild Mediterranean Mussels”, steamed with saffron, white wine, garlic, tomatoes and herbs ($11.) which were the largest mussels I think I have ever seen! Then we shared the “Szechuan Calamari”, served with garlic chili sauce, chopped peanuts and sesame seeds ($9.) which were also yummy. The sauce was perfect!

For dinner we shared a huge “Double Cut Pork Chop” served with a bourbon mustard sauce, potato gratin and apple chutney ($22.50). As I mentioned above, the portion was actually huge and certainly plenty for 2. The potato gratin was excellent and the apple chutney was cooked perfectly.

The menu also offers various salads and sandwiches, including burgers, prime rib with melted swiss cheese and caramelized onions, serve with thinly cut fries or even a Nantucket shrimp and crab roll also served with thinly cut fries. So there are many choices for the type of mood you are in.

If you want to go to the newest “hot” restaurant in the Las Olas area, I would definitely highly suggest this cool restaurant.

Enjoy!!

Canyon Southwest Restaurant

My girlfriend Lorraine had never been to the Canyon Southwestern Restaurant so we went one night a few weeks ago. If you go early enough you can be seated immediately as it only seats 65 people and gets quite busy later in the evening.

Our server, Julie, couldn’t have been more helpful in explaining the menu to us both. Lorraine and I shared the “Sweet and Spicy Crispy Calamari” appetizer (with Thai chili honey dressing, opal basil, blistered peppers and toasted garlic) - $16.  That was scrumptious!!!  We almost licked the plate.

Lorraine, for her entrée, ordered the “Pan Simmered Red Snapper Fillet” (with marinated tomatoes, toasted corn, purple Peruvian potatoes and diced avocado) - $25. She really thought the fish was extremely fresh and succulent.

I ordered the “Grilled Shrimp & Scallop Burrito” (with grilled peppers and onions, mozzarella cheese, toasted cumin roasted corn salsa and chipotle cream sauce) - $24. It too was delicious and quite a large portion!

The restaurant is open every night of the week, starting at 5:30 p.m. and also offers a Happy Hour (Sunday through Friday from 5:30 until 7:00). No reservations are taken but they can accommodate large parties of 10-12 people to be able to sit at one table, which is very nice and not often offered in most restaurants. They also offer catering services. If you want to schedule a holiday party, the restaurant will open for lunch hours in order to accommodate your group.

Take out orders are also offered, which is also a nice feature. So, I know that if you go to the Canyon Restaurant you will be quite pleased and it will become one of your new favorites!

Sugar n Spice Restaurant Wine Bar

My friend Carolyn was in from St. Thomas for a few days, and we decided to go to a new restaurant with me.  I was told that this restaurant, which opened on 2/27/08, was definitely worth going to. And, it was!

We were first met by one of the owners, Jean (from Ireland), who was extremely professional and very happy to see us, and quickly sat us down. This restaurant is very unusually decorated with all fun and bright colors, quite different from what you are used to, but very happy.

Carolyn and I shared an appetizer of Shrimp coated with some sort of stringed potatoes wrapped around the shrimp, served with salsa. Not only was it unusual, but it was also perfectly cooked and quite delicious! (Priced at $7.95.)

As an entrée, I ordered Veal Milanese, which was absolutely excellent, succulent, that could literally be cut with my fork, served with a side of pasta covered in meat sauce. Boy, that was the best veal I’ve had in a long time!

Carolyn, who wasn’t very hungry, ordered 2 sides of vegetables:  Au Graten Defanaues, which was rich, delicious potatoes done perfectly in an excellent cream sauce with a hint of lemon. Her second dish was Ratatouille, which she thought was “fabulous”.  It was blended with herbs and veggies and a tomato sauce which was light and unusually appealing. She found it “very colorful”.

The other owner of the restaurant, Vero (from France), came over to introduce herself. She does most of the cooking, and also was quite nice and friendly. While their menu is “Floridian French”, they also feature a lot of healthy items and localized or Americanized items. Entrees include meats, N.Y. Strip Steaks, Filet Mignon, veal and chicken dishes as well as a wide variety of items from the sea like shrimp, tuna, tilapia and sole.

This is a rather affordable place to eat, most meals come in at $15.00 and a drop higher. So definitely come in, as for Jean, and let Vero create something great for you. Enjoy!

Sea Watch

Beatrice and I had never been to this large restaurant that we had been passing along Route A1A for years and finally decided to go to a restaurant for lunch that we had never been to. That’s when I remembered my friend Holly telling me of the Sea Watch, and how good it was.

Right overlooking and actually on the beach, this special seaside restaurant dining place was quite excellent. This restaurant has been located at this same address, by the same owner since November of 1974. That kinds of tells you something.

Robert, our server, who was extremely cordial and very help immediately brought over the most delicious chunks of pumpernickel bread (to die for); and soft to spread butter, which I really appreciate. I find nothing worse than trying to scrape a hard pat of butter on a piece of bread without ripping the bread apart.

Beatrice ordered a cup of their Avocado Soup, served with lump crabmeat and tortilla strips. She found it crisp, with a great avocado taste, loaded with fresh lump crabmeat.

Beatrice ordered for lunch their Crab Melt Sandwich (pure and sinful), with seasoned lump crabmeat, melted jack cheese, browned and served on a toasted English Muffin. The order was quite large and yummy, as Beatrice put it. Both of our lunches were served with delicious coleslaw, nice and crispy, and the way I like it, without much mayonnaise, to hide the taste. I ordered a Lobster Roll, served classic New England style, also without much mayonnaise, but loaded with Maine chunks of “gold”. It too was absolutely delicious and brought me back to Boston, for a moment.

I did look over their dinner menu which is quite extensive serving all fresh seafood subject to season, weather and fishing conditions, but still quite long. Even steaks and chops are offered.

Try this restaurant, I know you will love it. Enjoy!

Las Olas Café

So here I am, sitting in St. Thomas at this fabulous restaurant and begin a conversation with a gentleman, who used to live in Fort Lauderdale. who knew?? So I happen to mention in our talk that I'm food critic for local restaurants in the Fort Lauderdale area and he tells me that 'I MUST' try a great restaurant, one of his favorites...The Las Olas Café.

When I arrived in Fort Lauderdale I immediately went to the Las Olas Café with my friends Ann and Bob. Arriving onto East Las Olas Blvd., you’d never know this quaint, quiet, private, excellent restaurant exists. You walk down a small alley in the heart of Las Olas and then it feels like you’re in Europe somewhere with twinkling white lights making it all the more inviting. We chose to eat outside as it was a beautiful night, but of course, they have a lovely dining room that is even more intimate, with it's atmospheric lighting and linen tablecloths lend a casual elegance perfectly suited for quiet conversations.

The menu reflects a certain sensuality; from the crunchy brushetta or even fried green tomatoes (served with jumbo lump crab, lemon aioli and a green tomato relish), which is what Bob and Ann shared, and both loved.

For the entrée’s, I ordered a New York Sirloin, which was that evening’s special. It was perfectly cooked and quite delicious, served with a side of vegetables. Ann ordered Mahi Mahi and also loved her dish. Our server, Patrick, was extremely knowledgeable and very cordial.

When we mentioned that we were reviewing the restaurant, they informed the owner of the restaurant, Paula Pace, and immediately were served Key Lime Pie and also a Chocolate Lava Cake (served with vanilla ice cream). They were perfectly cooked and quite yummy.

I know that if you try this quaint and slightly hidden restaurant, it will certainly become one of your favorites. Enjoy!

Ferdos Grill

My dear friend Kathy’s favorite restaurant is Ferdos Grill, she suggested we go and boy I was glad we went.

I found this restaurant to have a very relaxing atmosphere in which I loved! The restaurant was also very busy. So many people enjoying themselves and the food looked very delicious and I was so anxious to eat and try the food. The owners are Syrian, and they offer belly dancing on Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. and another at 9:00 p.m. How cool is that!!

The food portions were very large and cooked to perfection. Our server, Gabrielle, was very helpful and so professional. Inside the menu you will notice they have a variety of appetizers that all sounded wonderful. You will notice the usual dishes such as hummus, baba-ghannouj, falafels, veggie grape leaves and even lamb grape leaves (all priced reasonably, from $5.95 and up). They also offer many salad choices such as Fatoosh salad, Tabbouli Salad, Fava Bean Salad, Grilled Chicken Salad and Greek Salads all so reasonably priced.

They have great lunch specials too! Kathy LOVES lamb chops so that is what she ordered. They were priced at $15.95. (and it was a very large portion of lamb chops I might add). She described them as perfectly cooked (just the way she likes them)! Also included was rice pilaf, ice tea (refillable), a salad, and an order of hummus with freshly baked pita bread (all for that amazing low price).

I ordered a delicious Steakburger, which was a ½ pound of black angus beef served with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and French fries, priced at $7.95. It was ‘Excellent’!

They also offer many types of “Signature Grilled Kabobs” such as Ferdos Mediterranean Delight (which is a combination of Shish Tawook, Shish Kafta and Shish Kabob) priced at $19.95. Beef Kabob, Ground Meat Kabob and even Shrimp Kabob. This fantastic restaurant has everything for everyone. From seafood dishes to sandwiches to kebobs and so much more.

I was so thrilled that I ate here and I was really impressed with this local restaurant and I'm sure that you will LOVE it here too! Enjoy ~

H20 Café

About 1 month ago, a new, hip, classy restaurant opened up that I knew I just had to go and check out. As I pass the restaurant, it seems to be always crowded. My friend Louise came over to visit me, and we decided to check out H20 Café. H20 Café is located about 1 block north of Las Olas Blvd., in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The Café offers wonderful choices for lunch, such as: freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee, teas, smoothies (I tried the raspberry smoothie)….YUMMY! They also have a pannini bread and pannini cooking machine, which is wonderful! They offer Cuban sandwiches, tuna fish over salad, chicken Caesar salads, Caprese Salads, Caesar salads, 2 different types of quiches daily, deviled eggs (which I tried and they were very delicious)! Ham and cheese croissants, fruit bowls, cookies, various desserts, tortes and even a fruit parfait with granola. They also serve turkey subs, Italian ciabata, delicious coffee, and the one thing I just loved about H20 Café is that they are extremely dog friendly, as they always have a bowl of water for the pets of the world. Need extra cash? They even have an ATM machine there. What more could you ask for?

They not only are friendly and nice, but their food is delicious and quite inexpensive for what they offer.

For a mere $5. for parking in the car garage, you can pick up a lunch from the Café and take it to a glorious day in the sun, at the beach! How much better can that be? Enjoy!!

La Bamba Mexican & Restaurant

I wanted something different last week other than the usual restaurants that are around town. I was feeling a little festive and wanted some spice for lunch. So what better place to go for lunch other than LA BAMBA Mexican & Spanish Restaurant. I invited my best gal pal, Kathy for lunch at La Bamba in Fort Lauderdale. And, we left that place so happy for making the right choice for lunch. We were immediately led to a very nice table. The decor, of course has a mexican & spanish flare to it. Our server, Sandra, came right over and dropped off some delicious chips and salsa as we placed our drink order. The salsa is so fresh and filled with delicious cilantro, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and WAS just amazing. You have to try it!!

Kathy ordered the guacamole dip ($5.50), which was ripe avocados, blended with savory spices, served with refried beans and taco sauce. It was AMAZING!!! For Kathy's lunch, she ordered the Taco Salad ($7.50), which was a large flour tortilla filled with lettuce, tomato, cheese and delicious chunks of chicken or ground beef. Kathy said it was to die for!!

My lunch was a beyond fabulous! Grilled steak quesadilla ($7.95), which is melted cheese inside a large flour tortilla served with guacamole and sour cream. You really couldn’t beat these prices and with the food this good, you couldn't go wrong! Our lunch was so reasonable that we are definitely coming back. If your craving Spanish or Mexican food, go to La Bamba in Fort Lauderdale for a true Spanish Fiesta! With the owners from Salvador, they know their epicurean delights very well. La Bamba's other locations are:

• 5452 W. Sample Road, Peppertree Plaza, Margate, FL (954.978.6377)
• 4285 W. Atlantic Blvd., Delray Beach, FL (561.499.7996)
• 10169 W. Sunrise Blvd., Plantation, FL (954.370.1978)

If your in the mood for authentic Mexican & Spanish style food, I highly recommend LA BAMBA for everyone!

Lucca Restaurant

This past Saturday, I was so excited, as my very close girlfriend, Carolyn, from St. Thomas, was in Florida and we were getting together for dinner. Many people had told me to go to this “new” restaurant, so I called and made a reservation for the two of us. The name of this jewel of a restaurant is “Lucca Restaurant”,

David Clanciullo, (the owner), greeted us at the door and led us to a quiet table in the back so that we could catch up; you know what that’s like, right? After perusing the menu, Carolyn ordered Capesante Bocca Doro (Colossal Scallops pan seared with garlic cloves in an extra virgin olive oil served with organic spinach ($13.00). Carolyn, who is VERY picky, rated it a “10”, and said “that the scallops were so flavorful, tender and succulent. I ordered a Cesar Salad ($7.00), which was also excellent!

Our server, Bradford, was very affable, warm and friendly. The restaurant is only open for the past 7 months, but it is definitely worth the short drive up to it. Dinner for Carolyn was Ravioli di Aragosta ($15.00), which is homemade ravioli stuffed with lobster in its own sauce tamed with cognac and light cream. You could have licked the plate, it was so good! Carolyn again rated it a “10”, stating “the lobster was tender, pasta was al dente and the sauce was creamy yet with a subtle bite.” My entrée was Scaloppine al Vostro Gusto ($23.00), which is veal prepared “your” way or have the chef choose something just for you. The veal was wonderful, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, also, and I ordered a side of meat sauce, which was so flavorful and delicious!

This restaurants owner, David, was so accommodating. One of the patrons that night was a lovely gentleman and the chef made a special dish (that wasn’t even on the menu) of Fettuccini Alfredo, and he said that was just fantastic!

For dessert, Carolyn ordered Pennacotta, it was smooth, out of this world, creamy, not too rich, with Coulis (raspberry sauce), which was subtly sweet, but yummy! We topped it off with 2 cappuccinos! What an excellent restaurant, excellent dinner and excellent time! i will be back very soon at this restaurant.

Mississippi Sweets BBQ, Co.

My son, David and his wife, Amie Jo, came into Ft. Lauderdale recently. We decided to go out to dinner but just couldn't make up our minds. We all agreed up on a fantastic BBQ restaurant that I have never been to. The name...MISSISSIPPI SWEETS, BBQ, CO.! Boy was this sure a fantastic find! They have (3) locations: They are:

Mississippi Sweets BBQ, Co.
2399 North Federal Highway
Boca Raton, FL.
561.394.6779

Lake Worth, FL

Wellington, FL

The food was fabulous! I had had a late lunch, so I wasn’t too hungry, but I did taste a little something from everyone's plates of scrumptious foods. We ordered the Dixie Wings. You can get them either mild, medium, hot or garlic. We got the small dozen ($6.29) of the absolutely deliciouso garlic (mild) chicken wings done beautifully. And they are very, very good! The rest of my party tried their mild, medium and the hot dixie wings….I tried the mild Dixie’s and they too were great!

Next, we had the Riverhouse BBQ, and of course, I tried them and they melted in your mouth. They were excellent and they are only $16.99 for a full rack of Baby Back Ribs (or a half rack which is only $11.99). I MUST tell you to order the Cornbread….it also was to die for (a wedge of the most delicious cornbread I have ever tasted). It's a MUST! For only $.59., it's a bargain. There is sooo much butter in the cornbread that you don’t need any extra! Quite fabulous!

They offer side dishes….choices being Mississippi Sweets (thin sliced sweet potatoes, deep fried and seasoned to perfection ($2.99), Tractor Threads (criss-cut French fries) for $2.99. Also offered were the Wedge of Cornbread, Baked Beans, Cole slaw served with apple sauce (1/2 pint is $2.29) and they offer a pint for $4.49.

The prices are not bad. They also offer an extra bbq sauce on take out orders for $.99 or half pint for $2.09 and the full pint is only $4.09. They also offer other choices, such as Plantation Salads, either Biloxi Bleu salad for $7.99, a Cottonwood salad, for $7.99 or a Riverboat salad for $6.29.

Mississippi Sweets also offers different combinations of ribs, wings, chicken styles and pork (pulled) platter, bbq beef and beet & pork platter, also reasonably priced. Other favorites are Choctaw Catfish, Natchez Chicken or Paddle Wheel (all looked amazing on other people’s plates. Would you believe they also offer different sandwiches, and with so many choices to choose from!

I just want to say that you must go to Mississippi Sweets BBQ, Co. because their food was wonderful. The service was excellent (our server was Alissa, was quite informative and very sweet and knowledgeable). The owner Randy and the Manager, Charlie Ward, were also knowledgeable and quite nice. They were surprised that I was reviewing them, but also quite pleased about my reaction (actually all of our reactions). If you love good barbeque food, then you must put this one on your list!!! Enjoy!

Trina’s Restaurant

I know I have reviewed this restaurant before (for lunch) but this time I took my friend Lorraine here, for dinner. And what a time we had too! One of the nicest things about this restaurant is the location. It is directly across the street from the blue south florida ocean. Not only do they honor reservations (ask for a table outside, if the weather permits), if you’re lucky enough, (although you don't need reservations, I do highly suggest it.

Our server, Robert H., was VERY ambitious and quite nice. Lorraine had never had Escargot before, so we shared the Garlicky Escargot Flatbread ($15.00), which I absolutely adored. My rating was an 11! Lorraine (like I said before) never had Escargot but gave it an 8 and “she loved it”. The Flatbread had Garlic, Mushrooms, fresh Italian parsley, parmesan and truffle oil. Two words...OH MY!! Robert our server, then served us an “Anuse” (for those of you who don’t know what that is, and neither had I)….it is a bite of an appetizer, and at Trina’s, they change the Anuse every night. Our Anuse was a Cumin dusted Sea Scallop, panned seared, on a bed of roasted butternut squash, topped with micro green and a wonderful citrus roumalade. Boy, was that terrific! Lorraine loved it, giving it a 10, I adored it, giving it an 11! This Anuse is prepared by a wonderful man, Chris, who is one of Trina's chefs.

One of the best other addition to your dinner is the great “people-watching”, as you dine. That’s always fun. Lorraine, who lives west Fort Lauderdale, had never dined at Trina’s and found the restaurant quite terrific and was VERY impressed with everything.

The absolutely first thing I became aware of was the fact that they use napkins (white) that don’t shed onto any color (as I was wearing black). I had never experienced that. I was impressed. Forour dinner, Lorraine ordered the Truffle Potato Ravioli (Potato and truffle pillows with Parmigiano Reggiano butter ($21.00), Again, I was very impressed with my friend as she was willing to try things she never ate before. She never had tasted Truffles, she rated it a 6. I personally thought it was a 9! My entre’ was Pan Roasted Branzino, which is a Mediterranean seabass drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, fleur de sel braised fennel, served with Pumpkin orzo and lemon oregano jam ($25.00). It was WONDERFUL! Lorraine tried it and thought it was a 9. As for me, I adored it, and rated it an 11!

After dinner we both had coffee (Lorraine ordering decaf coffee) it was served in a French pressed coffee done at the table. (That’s a first for me). I ordered the Cappuccino, which was excellent.

By far, one of the BEST restaurants in the City, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at this great eatery!! Enjoy!

The Riverside Hotel

Not too long ago I had surgery. The reason why I tell you this is that I had volunteered to walk at the Florida Aids Walk this last weekend. Well, needless to say, I couldn’t walk the entire 6 miles, so I cut through from Broward Boulevard till I got to Las Olas and immediately walked to the Riverside Hotel. I asked for an outside table so I could eventually meet up with my friends. I ordered the Trifecta Omelet which is three large egg and choices of toppings, I chose Swiss Cheese, Sautéed Onions and bacon, served with a toasted english muffin. The other options that you could choose from are mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, ham, salmon, cheddar or swiss cheese and also served with home fried potatoes and a nice variety of toast to choose from. For a total of $8.95, it was quite a large portion of food. It was excellent! I thought to myself what a very reasonable price for what I got. I give it a rating of 10! My waiter, Richard of Ft. Lauderdale was the nicest server, as he let me drink coffee after coffee while waiting for my friends, who eventually showed up. Then, Trish ordered the Turkey Panini with balsamic dressing, roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella over her salad. She rated it from a 7. Ann ordered the eggs benedict which is poached eggs on a toasted english muffin with canadian bacon & hollandaise sauces, served with home fried potatoes ($10.95). She rated it an 8. Robert and Russell shared a florentine omelet with ricotta cheese, which they rated a 7, but thought it was very good. They also said that the Riverside Hotel offers “great” Bloody Mary’s.

If you are ever in the area of Las Olas (which many of us go to) I would highly recommend it for a nice, great time of people watching, where they don’t rush you and let you have a leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner! Enjoy!

Zuckerello's

If you want a great local Italian restaurant then it’s gotta be…Zuckerello’s of Fort Lauderdale.

My friend Carlos (I call him “Carlito”), had been to this restaurant lots of times and recommended it to me (so we went). It’s a very large restaurant that was quite busy the night we went. Now I can see why... It has a HUGE menu from ‘soups to nuts’.

Carlito first ordered pasta fagioli which is soup with tuscan beans, applewood smoked bacon, fresh herbs and pasta. Carlito rated it an A+), I even tasted it and yes..it was QUITE delicious! I ordered the minestrone soup which is a tomato-based broth with fresh vegetables. Not only was it an A+ too, but it was soooo thick and definitely FABULOUS!

For dinner, Carlos ordered their Yellowtail Snapper Frangelica (almond encrusted) Hazelnut-Frangelica sauce, served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables ($18.00). To rate it between a score of 1-10, Carlos rated it a 12! That’s super, isn’t it? I ordered my “favoriteItalian dish in the world…"Eggplant Parmigiana" topped with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce served with a side of angel-hair, also with marinara sauce. ($14.00). Did I mention it was 'YUMMY! On a scale from 1-10, I would give it a 12. It was fantastic!

The service was excellent, the ambiance very nice; The one thing that this restaurant does have (that you just don’t see anymore) is that when you walk in they actually have the “Specials of the Day” right there in front of you! Now, how nice is that? That truly is unusual..(at least to me!)

If you want a terrific local Italian restaurant, that is quite excellent, then Zuckerello’s would be my recommendation for any type of Italian food anywhere.

Rino’s Tuscan Grill

My newest friend, Susan (we met at a fund raiser at Neiman Marcus), and I had dinner plans. Since I usually pick the restaurant, I decided to let her take over and make the decision as to where we would dine. I met her at Rino’s Tuscan Grill, which her husband and she love. Since she can literarily walk there from her home, she really recommended this highly, and boy, was she right!!

Boy, what a place! Susan, being a “regular”, immediately introduced me to her friend, Gabriel Salas, the General Manager, who was more than gracious. He had no idea that I review restaurants (neither did Susan). It was such a gorgeous night (“another day in paradise”), I asked if we could sit outside. We sat and chit-chatted for a long while, still not glancing at the menu. When the waiter came over to offer us a beverage, I hadn’t even looked at the menu. Not only was I served the menu, but in addition, I received the “Chief Rino’s Featured Selections of the Day. There were many choices of either Appetizers and Entrées. Quite impressive. They offered Antipasti, Zuppe and Insalate’s. They also served home-made pasta’s like Tortelli Di Zucca Alla Salvia E Pinoli (homemade tortellini filled with pumpkin, fresh sage, Parmigiano and pine nuts, or Pappardelle Con Salsiccia E Porcini (wide noodles with sausage, porcini mushrooms and red sauce. Doesn’t sound too bad, huh?

Before they even serve you, you are brought over a hot, round, special rustic basic bread, a drizzle of olive oil atop, also served with a plate of olives, with fresh little chunks of Argiano Parmigiano Cheese. Susan ordered a special fish dish called, Chef Rino’s Specialty from the wood oven & grill, fresh imported Italian Branzino, filleted table side (when available). She was ready to suck the bones dry; but didn’t! I on the other hand ordered Fettine Di Vitello Dello Chef, mine being Veal Marsala (Veal Scaloppini – chef’s choice). It literally melted in my mouth. I loved the service, food and ambiance. The General Manager, greets you (if he knows you) with a great hug and kiss.

I loved this restaurant so much that last week I took my Bostonian friend Paul, who also appreciates fine food at a reasonable price. Steven, our server, only works one day per week. He’s a choo-choo engineer during the rest of the week. How interesting! That evening we sat at “my table” outside on East Las Olas, watching the people walk by. This time I ordered the Lamb Shank Osso Bucco, served with Risotto! Molto bueno!!! YUMMY! Paul ordered their Veal Scaloppini Marsala served over red marinara sauce. He too licked his plate clean!

What a “GEM” of a restaurant right in the East Las Olas area. YOU MUST GIVE THIS ONE A TRY…..IT TOO WILL TAKE YOUR HEART OVER!!!

The Greek Islands Taverna

When Paul comes into town, he always insists on his favorite restaurant in all of the city, The Greek Islands Taverna!

Every time we go there (which is a lot), there are lines out the door! Usually, I would NEVER go to a restaurant that you had to stand in a line. Never, ever! However, they offer many Greek dishes that are always just so perfect. How many restaurants can boast that they are perfect? They prepare delicious cuisine to make a memorable feast! AND, “Greek food is becoming fashionable because the world is recognizing how healthy it is.” Paul always orders their Smelts, fried and seasoned with lemon, or their Greek Salad (Horiatiki), made with tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, feta cheese and olive oil. He’s in love afterwards with either choice. Then Paul, always orders the only entrée he will eat there, the House Specialty, Lamb Chops, char broiled and seasoned with lemon, oregano and olive oil served with Patates Ladoregano (potatoes roasted with olive oil, lemon and oregano) and vegetables. That is $23.00 and quite a large portion, in which Paul picks up the bones, licking them till they’re isn’t a morsel left. HE ADORES THEM!

I love their Steak Tips, char-broiled to your taste, served with fresh vegetables! It’s a terrific restaurant, even though you might have to wait!!! Enjoy…

Gianni’s Ristorante

For a while now, my masseuse Holly, kept telling me about a fairly new restaurant in Pompano Beach called Gianni’s Ristorante.

I finally decided to go there because my friend and love, Carolyn from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and her new “guy” from upstate New York, Jim, to the restaurant. They took, and honored, our reservation promptly. This is a medium-sized restaurant, beautifully appointed, with a gorgeous glass-enclosed room in the back (which is where I sat with a group of 8 other friends when I returned a few weeks later). I guess that tells you that I love this restaurant. The service is terrific and the food is fabulous!

When I was with Carolyn and Jim, they shared an order of Fried Calamari, which they scored a “10”! Carolyn said that they were tender, succulent, and very fresh. Jim had lasagna for dinner and he’s tough, scoring his dish a “9”, which is right up there. It was a “huge portion, very filling and a good red sauce”. Carolyn had Ricotta Ravioli in Vodka Sauce. Her sauce had “a perfect bite to it, delicious, very rich and al dente pasta. She rated it a “10”. I ordered a dish I never even heard of, Veal Ossobucco. My veal shank (who knew?) was stewed for hours, falling off the bone, with absolutely terrific marinara sauce including veggies, served over home-made pasta.

Our server was Ashley (only 3 weeks there, but was very good); and John, the Manager of the restaurant, very gracious and appreciative of our patronage. Then to top it all off, Carolyn and I had Cappuccino, which was also fab!

What a great restaurant, and next time, I will value Holly’s recommendation. You should try it, I’m sure you too will love it!!!! And, to top it off, when I returned to the restaurant with the birthday party in honor of my great friend, Scott, even his friend, Anthony (who is Italian), ordered my Veal Ossobucco and thought it was a “10”!!!!!!!

Until next time,
Helene!

Las Colinas

The other day, my favorite guys from Boston, Roger and Paul asked me to join them for lunch. Paul chose his favorite “authentic” Cuban and International Cuisine hang-out, located in Wilton Manors. It was quite an unusual experience that I enjoyed that afternoon. If you walk into an ethnic restaurant and all you see are tables full of the same; then you know that you’re in for a treat (no matter where you are).

I hadn’t a clue as what to order; but you see the kitchen right in front of you, watching them cook everything to order. The ambiance wasn’t there but after looking over the menu (written in both Spanish and English), I decided to have their specialty – Palomilla Las Colinas, which was 8 ounces of Pulled Pork sautéed with Onions (yumm – and only $7.75). I was served a huge portion PLUS a huge order of Arroz Amarilla/Yellow Rice ($2.50) PLUS a pretty large order of Tostones/Green Plaintains ($2.50).The nicest waitress came immediately over trying to explain the menu’s to us. Oh, I forgot, we also were served a lovely salad before our entrée. How much more could you expect for the price? Paul also ordered the special and Roger ordered their Bistec de Pollo a la Plancha/Grilled Chicken Steak ($7.95) with his huge 2-sides also. Boy… I was really impressed that I marched right over to the owner (Juan and Rafael Tolentino) and other family members to let them know that I was choosing to review their homey but delightful, unassuming restaurant.

When I later spoke to my dear friend, Carlos (from Colombia, S.A.), he informed me that he eats there all the time! Yesterday my friend spoke to a totally different friend, who always eats there. I am telling you that Fort Lauderdale area has many great restaurants, but this one was a total Spanish experience that if I closed my eyes, I thought of my trips to Colombia. ENJOY!!

--> Christine’s Restaurant

My friend Ann and I decided to try a brand new (just opened in January) critically-acclaimed eatery. The name of South Florida’s newest, critically-acclaimed restaurant is Christine’s!

This restaurant is committed to elevating the quality of food as well as providing an exceptional environment within which one can take the time to fully enjoy it. They truly believe the appreciation of exquisite food and wine hinges on shared efforts to save countless traditional cheeses, grains, vegetables, fruits, and animal breeds that are disappearing from dinner tables due to the kind of mediocrity promoted by the fast food industry and contemporary agribusiness.

Christine’s Restaurant is a culinary education. Immediately greeted by one of the 3 owners of the gorgeous widely spaced restaurant, Christine Vitolo, we decided to go to the bar and listen to the great duo who entertained us with their beautiful music, giving us the opportunity to meet others who had already been there. Everyone who was there were repeat patrons who raved about the options. We were greeted by a smiling and cheerful Tracy, as the bartender. After hearing all these great reviews from the men we met, we couldn’t wait to try it ourselves. Scott, our server, was genuinely gracious and helpful. Scott brought us, before our appetizers were served, a Kampachi, which is sashimi-grade Hawaiian snapper, dolloped on a cucumber slice. That alone let us know we were going to enjoy a gourmet dinning experience. Then, Ann ordered a Roasted Pecan Crusted Goat Cheese Salad, served with masculine, candied pecans, mango, blackberry, tomato with key-lime vanilla vinaigrette ($14.), which she absolutely adored! I ordered the Boudain Crab Cake served with escarole, caramelized onions, apple wood bacon and Tasso gravy, also outrageous ($15.)!

Scott, very attentive, then served our entrees; which Ann had ordered a South Florida Cioppino, which is a sort of a stew with Wahoo, clams, rock shrimp, scallops, chorizo, corn, tomatoes and Peruvian potato ($30.) She left not a thing on her plate!! I ordered Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops, served with tomato risotto, braised leeks, grape tomatoes, asparagus and essence of corn ($24.) Other “specials” were New Hampshire Roasted Quail, Homemade Pumpkin Ravioli or even Grilled Rack of Wild Boar. All wonderful choices, I thought.

Dinner was absolutely fabulous. Ann then ordered their “IllyEspresso Crème Brule, garnished with Mocha Bean and Almond Biscotti ($7.), she licked the plate. Then the Executive Chef, Steve Shockey, a Texan (of all places), introduced himself, sitting at our table for a few moments, to hear our reviews. My crab cake (on a scale of 1-10), was a “12”! He has years of professional experiences at various other excellent Floridian restaurants.

Whether your palate desires decadent indulgences like foie gras and filet mignon or simple comfort food like Louisiana Gumbo and Steve’s signature “Chicken Chop”, you will find them at Christine’s Restaurant. I invite you to experience good service, a well-chosen wine list full of hard-to-find bottlings, fine spirits, modern American cuisine and perfect food-and-wine matches at Christine’s!

J. Mark’s Restaurant & Bar

Hidden on a side street that you wouldn’t expect is a great restaurant….'J. Mark’s Restaurant & Bar'. The owner Steven Mark Wilson is quite a nice gentleman from Ohio who shares responsibilities with his brother (in Ohio). They are committed to making our world a cleaner, safer place for future generations to live. J. Mark’s Restaurant has a complete recycling program in effect. They are quite proud of their food and service. They actually want you to feel free to share comments, concerns and compliments to the Management Team.

I had been told about this new restaurant (only open seven months) by a dear friend whose food critic’s I follow as her taste is similar to mine. She told me that this is her “new favorite” restaurant. With great service from Tina, our server; but the owner Steven Mark Wilson also told me she is a bartender and various other duties is one of their employees who have been with Steven and his brother in other endeavors for years and years. That says something about their loyal employees; but also the owners.

My neighbor and friend, Susan, went there last night and sat outside to view the Total Eclipse of the Moon. They offer many choices for appetizers, of which Susan and I shared the Egg Rolls (made with fresh avocado; red onions, cilantro, sun dried tomatoes and roasted corn ($8.95). They also offer seven different choices for salads; including “today’s featured soup”. All salads are served with house-made dressings. They offer garlic roasted chicken pasta ($14.); heavenly shrimp over angel hair pasta ($14.); blackened chicken pasta; veggie lover’s pasta; pepper-vodka pasta and five cheese pasta.

Their steaks are (proudly served to their guests) 28 day aged "Certified Angus Beef”. They are hand cut and trimmed in house daily. They are consistently tender, juice and flavorful. We both ordered their Hawaiian Rib-Eye Steak, marinated 48 hours in a tasty pineapple and teriyaki sauce, served with different choices of side dishes ($22.). They also offer crispy walnut shrimp; a fresh catch of the day; shrimp scampi, fish and chips and a fresh Atlantic Salmon. They offer six chicken entrees; of which we did not try; but everyone who was leaving the restaurant as we were entering told us this was their new favorite restaurant also.

They serve burgers and sandwiches; including a deep sea tuna burger (a sushi grade ahi tuna burger topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, avocado and their spice remoulade sauce (my dear friend says this is absolutely fabulous)! We finished off with decaffeinated latte’s and a cappuccino; all made from “Illy” Coffee. It doesn’t get much better than this for a very reasonable price range. You will make this a “new” favorite of yours also. Enjoy!!!!

Rendez-Vous Baekery & Bistro

Yesterday, I drove Mom to a nice little restaurant that I have never had a bad meal at. Imagine that! Tucked away on Oakland Park Boulevard resides a little gem. Rendez-Vous Baekery & Bistro is a terrific choice for either breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s your “neighborhood chefs that invite you to enjoy their quality French cuisine”.

I ordered and shared their fantastic French Onion Soup ($5.75) and we just about licked the cup. Then I ordered a delicious swiss cheese omelette, served with a fresh baked croissant and potatoes ($8.05). Yum Yum!! Mom ordered the Quiche Lorraine ($5.50) served with a delectable side salad. We ate everything and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. I even took home an order of something I’ve never seen before….it looks like a swiss cheese grilled sandwich with sautéed veggies in-between the sandwich, but with cheese melted on top with a sauteed mushroom. It too looked fabulous to leave.

Lunch was terrific, service is always great, happy, caring people (mostly from Europe), and even pretty. They have plenty of parking outside. You MUST go to Rendez Vous Baekery & Bistro!!! Enjoy!

The Euro Bread & Café

Did I ever tell you about this great upscale French Bakery called The Euro Bread & Café? I happen to live close by and frequent it almost everyday for either breakfast, coffee, delicious French pastries, the BEST FRENCH BREAD around, coffees and even cakes. They also serve fresh salads, delectable soups, terrific sandwiches, either wraps or on baguettes, quiches, pasta salads, flaky puff pastries filled with either spinach or mushroom with béchamel sauce and in addition, like there aren’t enough choices, they also offer grilled veggies and stuffed crepes. Obviously, they are in my book for constantly calling for wrap sandwiches, which I eat almost daily. Their choices of sandwiches are ham, turkey, pates. salami, prosciutto, smoked salmon, tuna and brie (all garnished with lettuce, tomato and cheese).

Their croissants are absolutely hard to decide…..they are quite excellent. My favorite is their cheese croissant….but they have 5 different choices; two choices of brioches and various other delightful, light, but yummy things. Their breads are baked freshly every day. People come from all around just to pick up their breads daily. You had better be early as they disappear quickly!

They also serve French type specialties; such as quiches, usually offering two to three choices daily, which is served with a salad.

You certainly cannot go wrong going to the Euro Bread & Café. In addition, their employees make me feel like I am in Paris. They are quite nice, friendly and will almost do anything you want. In addition, they cater special orders. If you are lucky enough that “Madam” Jacqueline made her special lasagna…..you CANNOT pass it by. You will love it! Also served with a side salad.

Prices are very reasonable. YOU MUST GO! Enjoy….I know you will love it!

Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
The Riva Restaurant

The funniest thing happened to me. The other day, noticing in my calendar that I was to be going to dinner with a VERY picky eater friend of mine, I immediately thought of the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, at their restaurant. I called that day and asked for their restaurant; and they connected me to The Riva Restaurant and I made a reservation for the two of us for 7:30 p.m. I kind of knew that the Hotel being tucked away from A1A even with their large sign on A1A; that my friend, Ilsa, probably would have never been there. Tonight, when we arrived and letting me know that she had never been there; I knew what was to happen. But, take it from me, when you call; ask for the restaurant named “3030” Ocean. As I led Ilsa toward the restaurant that I knew I was going to, the receptionist told me that I never had a reservation at that restaurant; but inadvertently made it at their other restaurant, The Riva. But I only wanted to go to the “3030” Ocean. Isn’t that funny?!

Anyhow, Ilsa wasn’t too sure; but I knew better. She ordered the Smoked Duck Breast Salad ($13.00) which she told me had “3 delicious figs” and a yogurt vinaigrette. She almost licked the plate clean. She rated it from 1 to 10; don’t forget how “picky” she is…..said it was “excellent”; but gave it an 8. Told you she was picky. I ordered the Sauteed Maine Scallops, sweet corn and chipotle sauce ($14.00). It was absolutely from a 1-10; it is an “11”! I ate it all. Then we shared an absolutely terrific Seafood Pasta served with clams, mussels, fish, wild gulf shrimp in a basil broth ($28.00). Ilsa that the “sauce was good”. SHE GAVE IT A “10”. It was excellent. Our waiter, Rudolfo, from Rio de Jinaero, Brazil, was delightful and cheery. The ambiance is gorgeous and to top it all off, they have a gentleman, Frank Carmelitano, who is a guitarist, but sounds like a trio of musicians with quite a sexy voice; playing behind our conversation; not over it! The whole experience was more than positive. It was a terrific evening!!!! Enjoy!

Trina’s Restaurant and Lounge

It was a just another day in paradise, so Gail and I decided to eat outside for lunch and went to Trina’s Restaurant and Lounge. Of course, we sat outside, glancing at the gorgeous blue ocean in front of us. Enjoying the day!

Gail ordered the Mediterranean Cobb Salad with chicken ($14.00); she loved it, served with various sorts of breads. I ordered a Roasted Tomato Flatbread with shrimp added ($16.00). I ate more than half; it was crunchy-crusted, delicious roasted tomato’s and mozzarella. What could be bad? It was the best flatbread that I have had in a while. It just hit the spot!

For a reasonable price, with a gorgeous view, terrific service and lovely ambiance, you almost feel like being on Nantucket Island, in MA. Enjoy!

Pelican Grand Beach Resort

Hi there everyone!

Here’s my next review of the North Ocean Grille, in the Pelican Grand Beach Resort on Route A1A, north of Sunrise Boulevard

You drive up to the Pelican Grand Beach Resort (just north of Ft. Lauderdale Beach) and park with valet service (don’t forget to get your ticket stamped by the restaurant, your valet parking will only cost $3.00. My friend and I shared the Duck Pot Stickers, fried, and served with Asian sauce ($10.00) for an appetizer. It was crispy and yet the duck tender. It was perfect!

My friends’ entrée was a Caesar Salad and he added blackened Mahi Maui atop. The size of the fish portion on the salad was more than enough. He nibbled it up like he hadn’t eaten in days. I ordered the “special of the day”, Grilled or Blackened Shrimp Quesadilla ($15.00), which was served with salsa, sour cream and freshly made guacamole. You could lick your fingers from the guacamole (or at least I could). The quesadilla was crispy, the cheeses melted, served with peppers and onions that were already sautéed. YUMMY!

This beachfront, up-scale dining experience was quite delectable. The ocean views were delicious. They have indoor and outdoor seating available. We also ordered 2 virgin bloody Mary’s plus an ice tea; which this lunch date all came to $61.00; including tip. Also, take home your receipt. Within 30 days of the date on the receipt you can get a complimentary “Spinach Dip” appetizer with the purchase of an entrée. That to me is a good deal!

That’s it for this week
Bon Appetite!

- Helene

My best friend and her husband flew down to Ft. Lauderdale for one night before they were embarking on a cruise through the Caribbean. I was lucky to have them as guests. We decided late in the afternoon that we should have known to make a reservation somewhere for a Saturday night in the city. But, I was smart enough to remember my favorite Chinese restaurant, The Rainbow Palace and they immediately accepted an 8:15 P.M. reservation for 4 people.

They are quite expensive…..but for excellent Chinese food; I think they are worth it. Every waiter, every server wears a tuxedo, serving their delectable food on rolling carts that are pulled up to your tableside. The appetizer that we shared was an order of Shrimp and Lobster Dumplings served with a honey mustard soy sauce was fabulous ($13.00).

Afterwards we ordered our entrées. My friend Harriet ordered the Chef Special, 2 lobster tails with sautéed veggies. She and I shared those and I ordered my absolutely favorite Crispy Duck Grand Marnier ($22.00); which we also shared. Mom ordered some sort of Spicy Beef dish, which she loved. George (Harriet’s husband) ordered a chicken dish that I cannot remember exactly; but almost licked the plate clean. We also ordered a dish of fresh Vegetable Fried Rice ($12.00). There were some leftovers that were neatly packed up to go.

The ambiance is beautifully done, the tables are set with polish silver and fine china. I know everyone will love it! Dinner for four with tip came to $250.00. As I said in the beginning, it is expensive, but certainly worth it ten fold and on top of all this, they immediately accepted an 8:15 P.M. reservation for 4 people.
