Classes & Support Services
Women In Distress partners with a number of organizations to provide
additional services to clients escaping from an abusive environment. The
Classes and services include: parenting skills; self esteem groups; job
training and placement and life skills training.
Parenting Groups are available in English and Spanish. These parenting classes are designed to give skills to new or long time parents who have experienced domestic violence.
Family Support Services -Watching a friend or family member live with abuse in their life is a very painful experience - one that can leave you feeling out of control and with no where to turn. That’s where the “support” comes in. These services will provide support to the family and discuss issues related to better understanding and assisting loved ones who are experiencing domestic abuse. The goal is to help increase safety in the survivor’s lives as friends and family become more aware of the dynamics of abuse.
E.A.G.L.E. (Ending Abuse for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere…even at home) is a program in partnership with SunServe Social Services and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. On the last Tuesday of each month – an Education Group from 4:30 – 6 pm and a Support group from 6:30 – 8 pm are held at the GLCC located at 1717 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311.
Shelter
WID provides emergency shelter to abused women and their children. For many women, leaving home is their first major step in breaking the cycle of abuse. The 54-bed Shelter’s homelike setting creates a safe atmosphere so that clients feel secure while they obtain legal and medical assistance, permanent housing, and employment assistance. WID’s shelter offers group counseling and education to women and their children in the following areas: domestic violence, parent effectiveness training, and financial management. Residents of the shelter do not pay for housing, clothing, and non-perishable foods. Male survivors of domestic violence are referred to an appropriate shelter specific to the needs of men, while domestic violence related-services are offered to them at the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center.
